Location

One of the most beautiful islands of the Ionian.

Kefalonia, the Ionian island that combines lush green mountain ranges and deep turquoise seas.

Welcome to Kefalonia. The largest of the Ionian Islands, where you can admire a unique blend of lush green mountain ranges and deep turquoise seas, ancient residences, farmhouses, and ancient monuments alongside famous beaches.

Kefalonia, the large island of the Ionian Sea, is located at the entrance of the Patras Gulf, between Zakynthos and Lefkada. Nearby is Ithaca, the island whose name is linked to the wandering Odysseus. The two islands make up the Kefalonia-Ithaca Prefecture, with the capital being Argostoli.
Kefalonia is a mountainous island, dominated by Mount Ainos, one of the ten Greek forests, which forms its main backbone. It is surrounded by endless coves and lace-like shorelines. Here grows the unique Kefalonian fir, and the rare small-sized horses, known as “Ainos horses,” live. However, the rarity is not limited to the plant and animal world, as geological phenomena are added to the natural gifts of Kefalonia.

The Kounopetra was one of the unsolved mysteries of our century, while Lake Akoli for years kept the secret of its depths well-hidden. The Sinkholes of Argostoli receive large amounts of seawater and direct it underground to the eastern part of the island, in the area of Sami, a region that has been designated as a unique speleological park. This area is home to, among other things, the stunningly beautiful Melissani Lake Cave. The small snakes of Panagia in Arginias and Markopoulo, the flowers at the church of St. George in Pastra, and the golden teeth of the goats and sheep in Agia Dynati are some of the phenomena that contribute to the island’s character as strange and unique.
The capital of the island, Argostoli, is built in a protected bay known as the “Koutavos Lagoon” and is connected to the other side of the bay by the stone bridge built by the British in 1813. In the area, one can also see the ruins of the ancient city of “Kranis.”
The Kefalonians are considered unique, energetic, and intelligent people. They are distinguished for their inventiveness and are regarded as excellent merchants.
